IS FLIRTING CHEATING?

THE EYE MAY WANDER, BUT THE HEART COMES HOME

I am going to deviate from my usual activism blogging to talk about something which has been discussed recently among my friends and family;

Is flirting cheating?

Everyone flirts.  It may be subconscious, but we all do it.  Before you say; “Oh no, I am married so I don’t”; have you ever smiled at someone of the opposite sex? Gave them a compliment? You may think you are just being friendly, but biology says different.  We humans are members of the animal kingdom, and like all animals our instinct is to reproduce.  We flirt because of our baser instinct to reproduce.  Biology is something you can’t control.

That leads one to ask; since flirting is biological, is it cheating? No, it isn’t.  Again, it is biology which is something you can’t stop yourself from doing.  However, society views things for each gender in a different way.  A man caught flirting is just; “being a guy”, but a woman doing that is; “a slut”.  If a wife does it, she is cheating.  If a husband does it, it is ok.  Apparently, doing what comes natural only applies to men.  Never mind that women are sexual beings, also.

Cheating and flirting are too different things.  Cheating means having a whole separate life with another person outside of your committed relationship.  Baby, house, the whole works.  Sex isn’t necessarily cheating, but that is a different conversation.  Flirting isn’t cheating.  It is innocent, and everyone does it.

Just remember that the eye may wander, but the heart comes home.
