Beat Me Lightly

There is a new campaign being promoted by The Council for Islamic Idealogy that encourages men to “lightly” beat their wives.  This is in response to the new anti-domestic violence laws that were recently passed in Pakistan.  The Council says it should be ok to “lightly” beat a woman if she acts out, such as showing too much skin.  Like a woman is a child and her husband is her father and not her partner.

I have no problem with anyone’s religion.  I don’t buy into Islamaphobia.  I don’t believe all Christians are homophobic.  I don’t believe all Jewish people are greedy.  I believe in God, although scientific fact always trumps so-called Biblical “truths”.  What I do have a problem with is people using religion to excuse hate or violence.  Our religious texts were written thousands of years ago, and to take them literally today doesn’t make sense.

Beating a woman to make her obey so-called rules is ridiculous no matter what your religion.  There are Christian men-the Duggars-who believe all women are supposed to do is keeping making babies.  Babies are wonderful, but a woman is an entity unto herself.  She is not a slave.  A woman is not a child you can “spank” because she wore the wrong outfit or didn’t have sex when you wanted to.  For there to even be a campaign to allow a husband to “lightly” beat his wife has no place in today’s world.
