I just watched a really great documentary on Amazon Prime.  It was called; “You Belong To Me:Sex, Race, Murder in the South”.  It was about Rudy McCollum, a black woman who in 1952 shot the white doctor who had been raping her for years.  He even fathered her youngest child-a fact not admissable in court-and while in jail she miscarried another child by him.  For her “crime” she spent 20 years in a mental institution.

Yes, Ruby had her demons.  She was a drug addict, but the real demon here is Jim Crow and Southern segregation.  At the time of the murder, there was a law in Florida that said a white man could make a black woman have sex with him, and she could not say no.  In fact, Florida was considered to be the most dangerous state for black people at that time.

Many native Floridians I know want to sweep their racist history under the rug.  How can you pretend it didn’t happen? Shame on you all.  You keep forgetting the past, which is why you keep repeating it.
