These are two separate things, but both bother me, not just as an activist, but as a human being.
The first one I don’t get is the way the black community treats their gay men. They seem to be ok with gay females, but when it comes to their men being gay, they act like the world is coming to an end. One of my best friends is a straight black male, and his brother recently came out as gay. They were raised by their grandmother, who is now doing everything she can to; “change his mind”. One of my friends has a co-worker who has a gay son, and this woman’s reaction is to call her son faggot and say that he is sick. This really needs to be explained to me, because I don’t understand how people who have faced hundreds of years of oppression and hate could possibly allow it in their own community. The vast majority of the countries in Africa have laws against people being gay, and even in that case those laws mostly target gay men. Why?
My other question is why do those who work in slaughterhouses find it ok to torture and abuse the animals. It is bad enough they are going to be killed for the human palate anyway, what is the point of hurting them? I watched a video today on PETA’s Facebook page that had been taken undercover at a pig slaughterhouse and it looked like someone carved their initials into the side of one of the pigs. Why do something like that? I consider myself to be pretty intelligent and well-read, and even I couldn’t come up with any justification for doing that.
